Aquaponics – Hydroponics CCIA The simplest definition of aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (growing fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil), in which fish and plants are grown together in one integrated system. Fish waste provides an organic food source for plants, and plants naturally filter fish water. Third parties to all this action are microbes (nitrifying bacteria). These bacteria convert ammonia from fish waste first into nitrites, then into nitrates. Nitrates are a form of nitrogen that plants can absorb and use for growth. Solid fish waste is converted into vermicompost, which also acts as food for plants. Combining both hydroponic and aquaculture systems, aquaponics uses its advantages and eliminates the disadvantages of each of them. |
